Gloves are one of this essential items for scooter riding. Scooter riders are a pretty conservative group of riders, but if you were unlucky enough to tip over in the Woolies carpark, the first thing you do is put your hands out, making riding gloves all the more important. And when you are out riding, gloves do the job of keeping wind chill at bay, and some are also designed to keep the rain and cold weather under control too.
The good news is that modern scooter gloves come in a huge variety so there bound to be a pair that suits you and your style of riding. While you read along, feel free to click on any of the links in this article to go to the product.
In the old days, (and Im really showing my age here), there were maybe two or three gloves worth choosing from. All were leather, and all fitted pretty poorly.
Now days with computer design and so many more materials, there is a great range of great fitting, leather and textile gloves for urban riders like us.
This is a really good thing as now we can fit different gloves to different riders needs and styles. For example a casual cafe rider won’t have a need for touring gloves, but would go for lighter weight, tactile gloves that give a good feel for the controls on the handlebars.
Conversely, a rider who is commuting 30 minutes morning and evening all year around might actually buy two pairs of gloves. One for dry weather riding and one for wet weather / winter riding.
Because this rider is doing at least 5 hours a week of riding, I’d recommend something like the RJ’s Polar Control II gloves for wet weather and winter riding, and the popular Corazzo Bolla textile glove or Corazzo Enzo perforated leather gloves for dryer warmer days.
The Polar Control II’s or the Boxer Waterproof Drytechs are excellent for winter or wet weather riding as they have a warm inner liner and waterproof exterior, while the Bolla and Enzo are lighter weight and breathable but still offer excellent protection.
When you’re choosing a pair of gloves ask yourself a few questions.
Will I be riding in under 15 degree temperature or wet weather, then think Polar Control II’s or Boxer Waterproof Drytechs
Do I only ride only nice days and shorter distances ( cafe rider ), then I’d consider the Bolla, Enzo, Enzo Tan, Cordero or the RS2 Evos.
If you are a regular commuter, I’d definitely rotate between two pairs to meet both 35 degree days and wet weather or 5 degree winter mornings. I’d go for the Polar Control II’s or the Boxer Waterproof Drytechs for the wet or cold days and Bolla, Enzo, Enzo Tan, RS2 Evo 2 Black, Caldo’s for the remaining days.
If you are an entry level rider and just want to get started I’d consider the affordable RS2 Evo Black/Red or the 1950’s styled leather gloves from Corazzo called Cordero that come in black, tan or yellow.
For those of you that would like to budget for one pair of gloves only, consider buying a pair of inner glove liners to extend the seasonality of your gloves or maybe a pair of waterproof over mitts if you are only buying dry weather gloves.
