Fitting the correct battery for your scooter is important.  Batteries are designed to fill the battery box cavity correctly, so they don’t move around, and also produce the correct cranking amps to start your scooter efficiently.  Our spare parts team can advise you which battery is best suited for your make and model.

Like the batteries we sell here at Scooter Central, some batteries are maintenance free and don’t require any hands on servicing, while conventional lead acid batteries will require topping up with distilled water at regular intervals.

During your regular scooter services our techs will check your batteries cranking abilities and top up fluids as needed and check the vent tube.  They will also check the positive and negative terminal for any signs of corrosion and importantly, check they are secure.

Charge It Up

Regular rides of 15 minutes or more are good for battery life.  Your scooter will use its regulator rectifier to control current being transferred back into your battery while it is being ridden.  This cycle tops up any charge that has been lost when you started the scooter up.

If you only do short trips of say 5 minutes, there might not be enough ‘recharge’ to get your battery fully recharged in that short a period of time.

If you take long breaks or ride irregularly, you may find that the battery also naturally loses charge over time.  If your battery is left idle long enough, you may find the residual charge is not enough to crank over your scooter sufficiently to start it up.

If this style of riding sounds like you, I highly recommend the addition of a battery smart charger like this one, or this one from X Tech.  A smart charger basically mimics a regular rider, by trickle charging the battery as needed. By using a smart charger during extended storage periods (like winter for example) , you can keep the battery at an optimum voltage and allow security systems and ECU memories to remain active.

Healthy Battery Notes

It is noteworthy that if your battery charge level drops too low, it most likely won’t be recoverable.  As well as natural discharge, the battery may also have to support the scooter anti theft system, immobiliser and ECU memory which all slowly drain power.

It can be super inconvenient to get set for a ride only to find your battery has let you down so remember if you’re not riding regularly, make sure to get yourself a battery smart charger.
